By decision of the Government of the Republic of Macedonia to establish a network of national institutions in the field of culture (Official Gazette No. 84/2003), the Institute for Protection of Monuments of Culture and National Museum-Ohrid received the status of a national institution of culture and was renamed into NI Institute for Protection of Monuments of Culture and Museum -Ohrid, i.e. NI Institute and Museum-Ohrid.

Today, NI Institute for Protection of Monuments of Culture and Museum -Ohrid is a national institution of culture whose core activity is the protection, systematization, scientific processing and presentation of cultural heritage of the Municipality of Ohrid, but also of the Municipalities of Struga, Debarca and Vevchani.

NI Institute and Museum-Ohrid  works both on protection and presentation of immovable and movable cultural heritage. It works on conservation on the built Christian and Islamic sacral heritage, as well as buildings of old urban and vernacular architecture. In its exhibition premises and storage it safeguards thousands of  archaeological, historical and numismatic artifacts, artworks, works of applied art, a collection of old and rare books, as well as an extraordinary archive of documents and photographs. This rich museum fund is systematized in collections divided primarily by type of artifacts as well as on chronological criteria.
